Hello! Last week we had our first Book Club meet up of the year and it was our biggest yet which is so amazing! It was lovely to see faces old and new joining us to chat all things queer, specifically Girl Mans Up by M-E Girard. It’s a contemporary YA book that follows Pen, a queer protagonist who is struggling mainly with how others see her. She describes herself as ‘queer’ and a quote on the back of the book describes her as a genderqueer character but I’m hesitant to label specifically as Pen never labels herself. Read on for some opinions on this month’s book and to find out our February read. Continue reading “LGBTQ+ Book Club – January 2020”

The Bookshop Series – The Portal Book Shop, York
I recently took a quick two day trip to see the sights in York. Obviously, whenever i visit a new place, i have to check out the bookshops in the nearby area. Luckily, York is packed with independent bookshops and really cool places to buy books, such as little indie charities!

LGBTQ+ Book Club – November 2019
This was our last book club of the year and it was truly a great way to finish our LGBTQ+ reads of 2019! In November we read All the Bad Apples by Moïra Fowley-Doyle and we had lots of fantastic feedback about it. The book is a contemporary YA magical realism with historical chapters too…I won’t say too much about that but it’s a great mix of genres! It was a great read and the first I, and many others at book club, have read of her books (excluding short pieces in anthologies).
LGBTQ+ Book Club – October 2019
First off, apologies for this being over a week later than normal! To be honest, it’s probably only been me bothered by this but even so! In October we read Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand which is the first horror we’ve read at book club. It’s a YA horror with multiple LGBTQ+ representations and it felt quite different in many ways to anything we have read before, and anything I’ve read personally to be honest. Raindance Film Festival: Queer Love Stories – Blogtober
Slightly different post here but I sat in on an industry talk at Raindance Film Festival called Queer Love Stories on Screen and it was really interesting and adaptations came up a few times so this isn’t just a purely film based post for those who aren’t interested in my passionate love for films! Continue reading “Raindance Film Festival: Queer Love Stories – Blogtober”
LGBTQ+ Book Club – Summer Bird Blue – Blogtober
A little later than usual but here is our Book Club update post! Over September, we read Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman, an author me and Sarah both love the work of. It’s probably the saddest book we will have read to date (though not in terms of the sexuality representation!) which we did warn everyone about prior to starting it. It’s also the first book we have read with asexual and aromantic representation, something which we will of course be reading more of within coming months. LGBTQ+ Book Club – Heartstopper: Volume Two
Last Thursday we met up for our monthly LGBTQ+ Book Club gathering! In July, we read Heartstopper: Volume One by Alice Oseman and had such a great response we decided to carry on with Volume Two. She created these graphic novels based off her webcomics which are available for free online. We will be mainly focusing on thoughts on Volume Two but some Volume One comments will be in this post too – it can be hard to separate for those who read it online and more people could attend Book Club this month so it was really nice to talk about both! People who made it and people who couldn’t but wanted to share their thoughts joined the conversation on our Google form too.
