Today is Mental Health Awareness Day which you have probably seen a bit about online – I think it’s really picked up profile in the past couple of years which is amazing! Obviously it’s important to talk about mental health all year round but I think awareness days and weeks are great for highlighting issues and bringing them to the forefront. I thought I’d do a little post about books I’ve read which I think capture mental health issues brilliantly. Of course, this is going to be a bit subjective and some may disagree but these are books which resonated with me in some way.

LGBTQ+ Book Club – Summer Bird Blue – Blogtober
A little later than usual but here is our Book Club update post! Over September, we read Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman, an author me and Sarah both love the work of. It’s probably the saddest book we will have read to date (though not in terms of the sexuality representation!) which we did warn everyone about prior to starting it. It’s also the first book we have read with asexual and aromantic representation, something which we will of course be reading more of within coming months. NYALitFest 2019 Wrap-Update
Last weekend was the long awaited NYALitFest in Preston! Last year was such a wonderful event, and to top off all the incredible authors and all the fun that was had, the event is completely free! I had even more fun if possible than last year, with more of my friends and a much bigger event.

I always love looking back at books I’ve read, films and TV shows I’ve watched and new hobbies/interests I may have picked up. It’s always really fun to remember what new things you’ve discovered and connected with throughout the year!

Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman
Starfish was one of my favourite reads of this year, i know the year isn’t done but i can’t imagine much will beat it for me. It was stunningly written and had wonderful characters. So admittedly i had extremely high hopes for Summer Bird Blue when i picked it up, and i’m glad it didn’t disappoint. Continue reading “Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman”
An Interview With Akemi Dawn Bowman
A few weeks ago, we got the wonderful opportunity to interview Akemi Dawn Bowman, author of debut novel, Starfish. It’s a beautifully written book which has difficult and heavy themes, such as abuse and mental health struggles. It also features some wonderfully positive relationships too however. I absolutely fell in love with the book when I read it and it is definitely one of my all time favourites. This is the transcript of the interview!
