Top 5 Unlikable Characters

Chat HeaderThis weeks Top 5 Wednesday is about the characters that are generally unlikable. These are not villains or characters that were intended to be disliked, but characters that just come across a little unlikable in the way they act and talk. I know my opinions on this will be completely different to other peoples, and some of these characters might come as a shock. I’ve become aware recently that i tend to dislike a lot of very well loved characters, so this is my change to express my opinions on those loved characters!

Gale from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
I know that this isn’t a major shock to anyone. Gale is possible the most well known ‘meant to be loveable, but actually hated’ character. I have some friends divided with this who absolutely  adore him, but i really don’t. I find him to be very self pitying and whiny, and that’s the main reason why i really cannot stand him.

Will Grayson, Will GraysonTiny Cooper from Will Grayson Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan
First of all, i feel like this novel was made to be very likeable and well loved, but i struggled to even read through it. As two of my favourite authors are John and David, i was shocked by how much i disliked this story. I think a huge part of that dislike was Tiny Cooper. To me, Tiny is a very brash and in your face person, and the description of him was way too over the top. He’s meant to be the larger than life character and the sensitive soul. I couldn’t have disliked him more and i’m sure some others have the same opinion.

Rhiannon from Anther Day and Everyday by David Levithan
While i’m on the subject of unlikable David Levithan characters, Rhiannon is one i particularly dislike. She is meant to be the heroine of the story and the person who keeps A together as a solid being for a little while with her feelings for him/her. However i find myself with the inability to like her. I cannot picture her in a way that would make her a nice person in the ‘real world’. Basically i cannot unsee her as a bitch and that puts you off a character.

Linus from Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella
It took me so long to get hold of a copy of Finding Audrey that i started reading as soon as it was in my hands, and i couldn’t have felt more disappointed with Linus, the leading male. He’s meant to be the guy that blows Audrey off her feet, makes her better. And we’re supposed to love him for that. But i found his arrogance and unwillingness to learn about her illness frustrating. I couldn’t have disliked him more if i tried, he was a complete disappointment when i wanted to swoon at a cute YA couple.

Luna Lovegood from The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
I will apologise for this one in advance as i am perfectly aware that Luna is a well loved and adored character. I do not actually dislike her to the extent that i dislike the other characters on this list, but i have never really come across anyone else who has the feeling for Luna that i do. She’s a perfectly fine character, and she’s written to be loved by everyone as she is in the novels. However there’s something about her that i really don’t like. Maybe its her ditsiness, but there is something i find completely unlikeable about her. When in a group, she’s great, but in any other circumstance i have to bite my tongue and pretend i like her.

  1. So many people love Gale! I’ve never really liked him and I’m happy to know I’m not alone in that!
