When read-along’s happen it always feels like the week literally flies by. We’re already on day 5 of the How To Be Both by Ali Smith read-along! You can read our past posts HERE if you need to do a little bit of catching up.
In my last post i talked about my mixed feelings towards the story and how it was told. I know Sophie was having the same thoughts to begin with. Yesterday she spoke about how the novel was growing on her the further she got in. I’m having the same thoughts once again.
I started of really disliking How To Be Both, i wasn’t completely sure of the direction it was going in but after giving it some time i can say that i am enjoying the storyline. George’s voice is starting to come through a lot more and she is becoming a much more likeable character to me.
The one thing i think putting me off about the novel is the fact that the premise is art. I know one of the main aspects of the book is that it is based around art and a certain artist, i think i just have a dislike towards art novels. I’ve read a few before and i didn’t like those in the same way. I think it’s because i cannot visualise the art that is being described, i like art right in front of me.
I’m about half way through and i’d say i’m enjoying How To Be Both more than ever before. If you’re thinking of trying this novel, keep in mind that is is slow paced and it may feel like you’re getting nowhere, but stick to it because it might be more rewarding in the end.
