Top 5 Books You’re Intimidated By

Recommendations Header

I have the on-going problem as a reader that I’m generally intimidated by a lot of books that I really want to read. Most of the time it’s the size of the book that makes me scared to start it, knowing that I’ll probably get bored half way and never want to pick it up again. Hopefully sharing my top 5 books that I’m intimidated by will make me want to read them!

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
I’ve had the Goldfinch sitting on my shelf for some time now and I’m still in no way inclined to pick it up. The sheer size of it terrifies me. I’m not sure what the story is about and I’ve heard incredible things about the content, I’m just worried about the enormous amount of pages waiting ahead.

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
I won’t lie, it’s on my bucket list to read through this mammoth novel one day. It will happen at some point, I’m just not sure when I’ll find the time (or the strength to hold it up.) Les Mis really is a huge book and once again it is only the size of it which is putting me off. I know some people who have said that it’s definitely worth the read, however right now I’m just a little too scared!

The Wicked Series by Gregory Maguire
I started reading the first novel in the Wicked series a few years back and I just couldn’t get in to it. As a teenager I was majorly in to all things theatre (and more secretly am now) so I thought I’d absolutely love this novel. However I found the way it was written difficult and I couldn’t focus on the story. Since then I’ve found the idea of reading it again daunting and it’s making me worried to start the series. These might be some books that sit on my shelf to look pretty!

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
Once again this is a novel that I’ve wanted to pick up for so long but the contents of it is worrying me. I’ve heard from numerous people that it is a very heavy book with quite a complicated story line. I definitely want to read it at some point in the future as it seems to be a great book to have under your wing, however I’m pretty intimidated by what’s inside the nice cover.

The Night Film by Marisha Pessl
I picked up the Night Film towards the end of last year because I found it for a ridiculously good price and had heard great things. I’m not even sure why this novel intimidates me so much but every time I go to pick it up I have second thoughts and put it straight back down again. It’s probably the size of it which worries me, which is obviously an irrational fear. I will get to The Night Film one day.

  1. I’m so intimidated by Les Mis too. The book is so huge and daunting. I’m familiar with the musical, but it would be interesting to see how it compares to the novel. For me the most intimidating book has been James Joyce’s Ulysses.
