When We Were Liars was first released I had very little interest in it unlike everyone else. I’d seen so many people saying that it was an absolutely incredible book, however the cover just didn’t say the same thing to me! After I’d heard a few more people recommend it who I trusted, I decided to pick myself up a copy and decide for myself if I liked it or not.

We Were Liars is a story centred on the Sinclair family and their holiday island in which they gather every summer. Cadence and her cousins spend every summer together on the island until one year when Cadence doesn’t return. She spends time with her father abroad and once the next summer rolls around she returns to the island to see her family. Except everything is different, and everyone is different around her. She doesn’t know what is truth and what is lies anymore.
I went in to this story knowing absolutely nothing about it having read nothing by E. Lockhart before. I must say that I’m not disappointed at all that I ended up picking it up. It took me a little while to get in to the story, however with the helpful family tree and map of the island in the front of the book it was easy to pick up who was who’s sibling and who lived in what house. Without the map I think it would have been a lot more difficult to imagine. About half way through I managed to get really in to the book and blasted through the last half.
Not only were the characters well designed, but the plot itself was nothing short of mysterious and amazing. It’s rare that you find a young adult novel with so many twists that keeps you wondering what’s going to happen, I never expected this book to be like that but it was. The whole idea of the book I found to be phenomenal, you always know it’s a great book if there’s absolutely no chance you’d come up with it yourself! It was so unique and unlike anything else I’ve ever read I cannot praise the storyline enough!
I cannot be more happy that I’ve read this book and I hope so many more people choose to pick it up! From its writing style to how well it flowed to how complicated the idea was without it being overwhelming. Everything was just well done. The best two words i have seen to describe this novel are ‘modern and sophisticated.’ It was one of my favourite reads of the year and I really cannot wait to get stuck in to more of E. Lockharts work!
