Every year I make it my goal to read a Christmas book around Christmas time. A festive read just gets you in a good, festive mood! This year I managed to pick up the novel to my favourite Christmas movie! Skipping Christmas (Christmas With the Kranks).

Summery : Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded shops, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That’s just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they’ll skip the holiday altogether. Theirs will be the only house on the street without a rooftop Frosty the snowman; they won’t be hosting their annual Christmas Eve bash; they aren’t even going to have a tree. They won’t need one, because come December 25 they’re setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. But, as this weary couple is about to discover, skipping Christmas brings enormous consequences – and isn’t half as easy as they’d imagined.
Skipping Christmas is the story of Luther and Nora and their first Christmas after their daughter Blair leaves home. Blair left a month previously to volunteer for the Peace Corps and was not going to be returning home until next Christmas. Luther decides that this is the Christmas that he wants to skip, ignore the holidays and go on a cruise instead. Although everyone around them completely dismisses their choice for the year, Luther and Nora power through until Christmas Eve, prepared for their holiday to start on Christmas day. That is until they receive a phone call form Blair telling them she’d be home in just seven short hours to celebrate Christmas with them.
Now, ChristmasWith the Kranks is my favourite Christmas movie. It’s different and unusual yet still festive and makes you feel good about the holidays. I was hoping the same thing for the novel it was based on and i’m so happy to say it completely pulled through. The book still had the same feel to it and was a very Christmassy read!
Skipping Christmas was my first book by John Grisham and I wasn’t disappointed. I feel like everyone at some point has read a John Grisham novel as he’s an author who is highly proclaimed in the thriller market. He created such funny and cynical characters who were apart of a story that can be appreciated by absolutely anyone. The story itself was incredibly well written, making it an easy read for the festive season. Not to mention how funny and sarcastic he made each scene.
Even though Skipping Christmas is an adult novel with some serious undertones, there’s still some of those magical Christmas element that everyone love. A mysterious Santa type figure and a winking snowman completed the novel for me.
Skipping Christmas was one of my fastest reads of the year. It’s short but packed with hilarious scenes and relatable characters! The sense of friendship and coming together gives you those warm, fuzzy festive feelings that we all want in December! Even if you don’t get chance to pick up Skipping Christmas over the festive period, make sure you watch Christmas With The Kranks because the movie is definitely one of the best film adaptations I’ve seen!
