Have you ever bought a book just so it will look nice on your shelf? Who are we kidding? We all definitely have done that! It’s always a very big risk spending your hard earned cash on a cover buy book because you might get it home, look at the reviews on amazon and realise what a terrible mistake you’ve made when it’s only rated one star. Yes, we all have done that too. However there are some books that turn out to be the most magical books you’ve ever read that stemmed from just a cover buy!
I certainly have bought many books in passing just because of the covers of them. A lot of the time I read the back just to make sure I will actually read the book, but my initial judgement is always on what the cover looks like and if it would be nice on my shelf. However some of these cover buys have become some of my favourite books of all time. Here are just a few of them that I’ve absolutely adored (even though I probably bought them for the wrong reasons!)
The Wicked and The Divine
I’d heard a lot about the Wicked and the Divine when it was first released, and the one thing that drew me in instantly was the cover. At the time I wasn’t reading many graphic novels and I found the cover for this novel so beautiful I had to pick it up! Luckily I ended up absolutely loving it and it actually got me back in to reading more graphic novels!
The Night Circus Erin Morgenstern
Again, when the Night Circus was released I was more intrigued by the cover than anything else. There are a few different ones and they’re all equally stunning and fit the book perfectly. The idea of the novel was interesting but not something I imagined myself loving. It turned out that the writing was just as beautiful as the artwork.
Bright Young Things by Scarlett Thomas
I picked up this novel a long time ago in a closing down sale, I’d never seen it before or heard anything about Thomas’ work but as soon as I started reading I was hooked. The cover is so captivating and bright it truly stands out when it’s buried between other fiction novels. I cannot express how happy I am that I was drawn to this cover instantly because it is now one of my favourite novels.
The One That Got Away by Lucy Dawson
When I bought this novel I was in the mood for some contemporary, fluffy chick-lit. I wanted a novel that would make me feel all warm inside that I could get cosy with. Admittedly I picked up this £2 steal without even reading the back. The cover just screams chick-lit and I knew it would be the kind of novel that I’d be in to at the time. I’m so glad I picked it up because this is definitely one of my favourite adult contemporary novels!
